  • Petit larceny — Is the taking of property valued at less than $1,000; it is most often referred to as shoplifting. Since it is a class A misdemeanor, it is punishable up to one year in jail, three years probation or a conditional discharge. If the property is damaged, the District Attorney's Office will also seek restitution.
  • Grand larceny — Includes the unlawful taking of property, including credit cards or debit cards, with a value of $1,000 or more, or property taken directly from another person. Conviction can carry a prison sentence of one to four years (or more depending on the amount taken). The District Attorney's Office will usually require restitution in order to get a better disposition.

Nassau County Larceny Defense Lawyer

The father/daughter team at Lerner & Lerner P.C. has more than 50 years of combined legal experience. We have handled many cases involving theft, and we understand that there are a variety of reasons behind it. Oftentimes, life stress factors such as depression, mismanagement of prescribed medications or illness can be a factor. Stealing may also be a means to support an addiction to drugs or gambling. Or, it could simply be a one-time mistake.

We are compassionate and nonjudgmental, and will listen to you and help you make informed decisions. We will work to represent you as a person, and not just a number on the court's calendar, allowing the judge to put a face to your name by providing character letters from people in your life who know that the action was not typical.
