Former tennis star avoids criminal stalking, assault charges

|

It can be very upsetting to learn that you are facing criminal charges related to behaviors that may not seem to warrant such a serious response. This can often be the case when a person is charged with domestic assault, battery or similar misconduct that may stem from a simple misunderstanding. But rather than ignore what it at stake or assume that everything will work itself out, people in this situation may want to take action to protect themselves from the very serious consequences they could be facing.

That is what former tennis star Jennifer Capriati did after she was charged with stalking and battery. The Olympic champion was recently accused of the misconduct by an ex-boyfriend but took steps to protect her criminal record and now the charges will be dropped. New York residents who may be in the same situation may want to consider taking similar actions.

According to reports, Capriati got into an altercation with her ex on Valentine’s Day. The two were arguing and the situation spiraled out of control. The ex alleged that Capriati punched him repeatedly in the chest while yelling at him. And he says that this was not the first time he had been pursued and harassed by Capriati. Police then charged her with battery and stalking charges.

The former tennis star says that the allegations made by her ex are not accurate and that people have only been presented with one side of the story. This is often how people feel when they are in this situation, and it can be very frustrating. But instead of waiting for the situation to get worse, Capriati tackled it head-on. She attended anger management therapy and also completed 30 hours of community service. As a result, the charges against her will be dropped.

Even though domestic assault allegations can stem from exaggerated statements or misinformation, it can be very important to take these charges seriously. They will not go away on their own and a conviction can mean some serious consequences including jail time and a criminal record. That is why people in this troubling situation may want to speak with an attorney who can work to defend you and help you avoid exposure to punishment if possible.
