Traffic stop leads to DUI charges for New York man

A resident of Brewster, New York, has reportedly been charged with a DUI after a traffic stop. According to the reports, officers noticed the 29-year-old driving erratically on Railroad Street early in the morning. The officers who pulled the Brewster man over stated that he was intoxicated at the time. The police officers searched the Brewster man and reported that he was in possession of cocaine.

The Brewster man was charged with driving without a license, possession of a controlled substance and driving while intoxicated. The man was sent to a local correctional facility with bail set at $1,000. However, a local sheriff reported later that the man was turned over to immigration officials following the criminal charges.

The Brewster resident was a citizen of Guatemala, which meant that after he posted bond, he was released into the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department. It was not stated how this will affect the charges raised against the man.

A DUI attorney may be able to help this man plead guilty to lesser charges in exchange for a lighter sentence, as he is currently facing multiple serious charges. It was not stated how the authorities collected evidence that the man was intoxicated. A DUI attorney could cast doubt on the fact the man was intoxicated. A DUI attorney is especially important in this case because a DUI is one of the crimes that can be used as grounds for the deportation of an immigrant, in addition to the other harsh penalties a DUI can impose. A DUI attorney may also be able to request leniency on the grounds that no property was damaged and no one was injured.
