Domestic Violence Awareness Month is recognized in New York

Today marks the last day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It was a month during which New York state officials urged New Yorkers to wear purple and Gov. Andrew Cuomo asked the public to participate in many ways in the yearly campaign called Shine the Light on Domestic Violence.

Grand jury indictments dismissed due to prejudicial information

A New York City man had multiple drug charges brought against him dropped because of possible prejudicial information being revealed to a grand jury.  The individual in question was indicted by a grand jury on four class B felonies.  However, a county judge dismissed these charges because information was revealed to the grand jury about an alleged uncharged crime being attributed to this individual.

35 felony weapons charges against gun collector dismissed

When people are being investigated for or charged with criminal conduct in New York, it can be very easy for them to do and say things before speaking to an attorney in order to try to clear their names. Often times, this means allowing authorities to conduct a search of their home, office or vehicles without a valid search warrant. However, if and when this happens, a person who is ultimately charged based on the findings of a search can work with an attorney to challenge the search. If it is determined that the search was improperly conducted, any resulting charges can be dismissed.

Water gun, shouting leads to arrest for domestic assault

When police respond to a domestic disturbance call, they are often ready and determined to make an arrest. This can be true even if they arrive and there is no one hurt and the assault seems to be little more than a disagreement between two people. Even when this is the case, New York police may still decide to arrest whichever party they feel is the aggressor in the situation.

Minister and former NFL player formally charged with fraud

Former NFL player and current minister Irving Fryar was recently charged for conspiring to steal money along with his 72-year-old mother. The two were recently indicted on white collar crime charges of conspiracy and theft by deception and could face some serious repercussions if they are convicted. But their fate is far from sealed.

How strong is that drink? Many New Yorkers may not know

Drunk driving can be one of the most upsetting charges a person can face, and it is one that authorities are particularly aggressive in pursuing. They often look for any sign or hint that a person might be intoxicated so that they can pull a driver over and conduct breath tests and field sobriety tests to confirm their suspicions.

Is a dog considered a lethal weapon in New York?

People all across the United States generally believe that we know what is considered a dangerous weapon. If asked, a person might mention guns, knives and other sharp or powerful objects used to inflict pain on another person. But did you know that in some cases, man's best friend can also be considered a weapon?

Will New York court toss murder convictions for 3 drunk drivers?

Accusing a person of a crime is one thing; but convicting a person of that crime is quite another. A conviction can require evidence, extensive investigations and a courtroom trial. In these situations, a person may want to have the support of a criminal defense attorney who can challenge the evidence, conduct a separate investigation and argue on behalf of a client in the courtroom. Legal help can be important, especially when a conviction comes down to the interpretation of a few words.

Mother faced felony for spanking child

Allegations of domestic assault or violence can put people in a very upsetting position, especially if these accusations are made falsely out of anger or resentment towards another person. And whether they involve spouses, roommates or family members, accusations of domestic violence are often very complicated and damaging. Even if a person believes he or she has done nothing wrong, that person can end up facing serious criminal consequences if they are convicted.
